Is it a good time to build a system?

Hello.

Back when PS3 came out,I had built and bought myself a new system a few months before the release. When the consoles came out (also DX10),the components were literally revolutionized.
Needless to say,the lifespan of my brand new PC was halved.

So this time,I kept an eye on the console releases, waiting for another wave of drastically upgraded components, but the waters seem pretty calm...Not sure if that's because I don't keep an eye on gaming as close as I used to back then,but...

Anyway,I wanted to ask if you think there is a new wave of computer components coming soon?Of course new parts are BOUND to come out but what I'm asking is is there anything on the horizon with such a huge leap that those before it will become absolute trash? (Gefore 8800 was the case last time...it was the first DX10 card I think?)

Or would you say go on and build yourself a PC,there's nothing coming this year?

Thanks.

There is never really a good time, there is always a new wave of technology on the horizon that promises to be the next big thing. In most cases, it's pretty evolutionary rather than revolutionary, so it's pretty uncommon for something to make a huge step forward.
You can make an argument for holding out for various product launches, the next wave of CPUs or graphics cards, but usually these components are at their most expensive at this point, so you get poor value for money. By the time you wait a few months for prices to fall into line, often there is news of the next thing.

Waiting or not waiting is unlikely to have a significant bearing on a PCs lifespan. Consoles work in a different bubble, to entirely different standards, so you can't really draw too many parallels between the technologies. The PS3 is over 7 years old now, and you'd never assume a gaming PC would have anything like that kind of lifespan.

Although I'd agree with rgd1101, there always something coming in the pc market but I would stay its best to wait at least a month or two since Maxwell is just around the corner and the new gpus are expected or bring impressive gains or atleast lower the price of current keplar gpus.
