I need to get an optical drive for my new pc build and I would prefer to get an external drive because I will need to take the motherboard out to put in an internal. I was wandering if I could use the external optical drive from my dad's mac? I won't be playing any serious games on it, mainly to install the os and drivers.

Solution
I found this does not work - Although the drive is recognised on the USB, it will not allow the CD/DVD to be inserted into the drive which has an electronic loading mechanism.

I have found exactly the same thing as robgamlin -- that the external drive appears as a device in windows explorer, but will not accept a CD.

There is a reasonably simple solution to this. I had recently installed windows bootcamp on an Apple Mac air, and there is a file that contains all the drivers for the Mac Superdrive.

If you download the bootcamp files from Apple, there will be a folder called bootcamp>drivers>apple. Then install the file called AppleODDInstaller64.exe

This worked perfectly! Sorry for coming in late to a probably dead thread, but in case anyone finds this it works as hoped. Just google "apple bootcamp drivers" and download the package. This was the only driver I needed to install, didn't need the rest.
