I've had this motherboard in my system for the past 3 years with no problems but now many issues including:
1)system crashing
2)system freezing
3) sticking at bios flash screen during boot
4) Had to reinstall Windows 7 64 bit to stop the crashing
5) unable to download and install ANY windows updates
6) Cannot install ANY software successfully on the HDD

Could this be the Mobo failing or could this be the HDD failing?

IIRC that is one of the first P67 motherboards and would have the SATA issue -- remember that Intel had to recall the chipset and make a revision? See HERE.

If you are using one of the boards with the defect your SATA 3Gbps could have started failing, and you would need to use the two 6Gbps ports only and maybe add a SATA port PCIe card.

No, the problem should not have damaged the HDD, and yes move the HDD and optical to the SATA 6Gbps and they should work fine.

But then you are out of connections since the controller only has 2 SATA 6Gbps ports, all the others are 3Gbps and suffer from the Cougar Point issue.

(I don't recall if you need to enable any bios settings to support legacy SATA on the fast ports for the optical drive on the first P67 chipsets, so if you have any issue just take a look at your bios for that.)

Thanks, I plugged both the hdd and optical drive into the two SATA-III ports and then did a fresh install of windows 7. This time it has worked and all updates have worked also the hdd is working perfectly

Great! If you want to add more drives in the future you can always add a PCIe SATA card.
