Using standard disk drives in proprietary hardware

Anyone know if a standard SATA drive can be used on a modern Dell or HP server? Will it cause the raid controller any problems?

There seem to be differing opinions about whether the proprietary drives have different firmware or even different circuit boards but of course it could all be rumors to make customers buy their drives.

Hi

It may well be possible to connect a retail (standard) hard disk or SSD to sata ports on server

But you should be using high speed (10k or even 15k rpm)
24/7 rated drives designed for use with raid controllers

For long term reliability
Look for 3 or 5 year warranties rather than 1 year retail drive warranties

The hard drive manufacturers have drives ment for these purposes & may be cheaper than a HP or Dell part

if you have cheap second hand server with no drives and are not using it as a server then you could ignore my advice
