Hello, I have recently been having problems with my Dell OptiPlex 745. Lately, as the description says, my computer has suddenly been shutting itself off when I game for a while with only a slight warning of a glitch in the game before it powers off. I tired to turn my settings on my games (L4D2) to as low as it can and it still does it. Usually it happens when the game is throwing a lot of things happening at once at me. I need help.
My specs:
Dell OptiPlex 745 (I made some changes)
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
(changed bios) Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 2.6 6
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU e6700 2.66 GHz (originally had P4)
4096 MB RAM
I have 2 PSU installed, one installed that the factory had put in originally (280W), and an external one- CoolMaster Extreme Power Plus 500W (the problem probably isn't with the power)
Graphics card is a Sapphire HD 7750
When I replaced the CPU, I didn't put new thermopaste on because I didn't have any at the time (and still don't now) The CPU fan is the original factory placed one in it, Copper. (Sorry, don't really know what it is) Maybe I need a stronger one?

Yuk
(changed bios) Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 2.6 6

That system is a Frankenstein. Troubleshooting those components (2 PSUs?) would take a day. Thermal paste is absolutely required.

I recommend tearing it apart and building it properly, with 1 Power Supply, restore the original BIOS, put thermal paste back on and try again.

Actually the problem could be with the power. The extreme power plus is a horrible PSu and has bad voltage regulation issues, mix that up with a frankenstienesk PSU config. However not replacing the thermal grease could also be causing the CPU to overheat as you should have cleaned off the old grease and applied new stuff. I would start with the thermal grease as thats the cheapest option and if that doesn't work I would get a better single PSU to power the system.

thanks, but the problem that you both mentioned about the psu, its impossible for me to find another psu that fits my computer because the only psu's that can fit in it are the original factory made ones which are only 280W, i figured out a way to attach two psu together. When I turn on my computer, they both turn on at the same time. So far its been going very well. i just ordered some thermopaste and I'll see if that works.

and the bios, what's so bad about the one I have? If its so bad, how should I get it back to the previous one (btw, don't remember what the previous bios was)

Just buy a cheap tower from Cooler Master, you can usually get one with a 500w Powersupply included. 2 problems solved and gives you an excuse to rebuild.

are you sure that everything in my computer will fit? like the motherboard and all the components in the computer? Oh, and I never built it from scratch, I bought this and just put parts to it that helped what other problems I had.

Yes, all computer components have a standard fit.

The Motherboard is most likely a micro-ATX. Just make sure you install the motherboard on the gold pegs correctly. I took a 1998 IBM Aptiva PIII @ 500 Mhz and dropped it in a very similar case.

With the front of the tower facing you, if the motherboard is mounted on the right side, you are good.

If its mounted on the left panel, than you're f*k*d. Looks like BTX is a industry none-standard that was dumped. Early BTX boards are fully compatible for standard ATX though.
