I was planning on buying an intel Pentium G2020 for a budget gaming pc and I was wondering if it is still worth buying, or will it become old very quickly.

More about : intel finely stop selling pentium

For modern games, you will essentially need an i3 and a drink to forget that you just wasted 50$

Budget and gaming PC don't go well together. Usually AMD is the best choice on a budget.

The i3 is over the borderline, the pentium is clearly under it. Check the amd athlon x4 series if you want a budget solution (with no future upgrade available)

I don't really like AMD that much, many people keep telling me that the Pentium is worth having for a budget build.

If you're starting off with a new build, check out Kaveri. Free BF4 with some combos on newegg, and the graphics are similar to that of the 7750, so you should be able to run BF4 on low-medium at 1080p. The price looks expensive, but you don't necessarily need a graphics card, and you can just get a new one and have dual graphics later on.

I live in the UK so I can't get anything from there.

Ah, well I'm sure you can find something. It's good without the combo, too.

Right now Kaveri series have not fully shipped to Europe (at least thats the case in Greece)...

I am just going to stick with the Pentium, it should be a good start for PC gaming.

A few years ago on older games sure, it might work on a low CPU usage game, but there are better options.

Dude, Pentium won't do you any good for running modern games, especially something like bf4.

I have stuck with the Pentium, its only 10% slower then the i3 and people are not giving me the right info I need, I am really grateful for the help but it's is not clear. I know that it is faster then the Athlon, but that's what I am sticking with, I have seen people get good performance out of this.

If you're adamant that a pentium processor is so great, why did you ask for other's opinions?

I am not saying it's great, I mean it should be enough, When I ask for peoples opinions it can help me upgrade in the future. Thank you for your time.

It won't help you upgrade in the future, 1155 is a dead socket, getting a haswell i3 will permit you to upgrade to a broadwell processor when they come out, as supposedly they will be on the same socket, and you will hav much better performance in games, even if you don't get a gpu, because hd 4600 is pretty good integrated graphics.

If you cannot afford a Core i3, then I suppose the Pentium will have to do. You can then save up money to upgrade to a core i3 or core i5 (better) in the future. You will need a graphics card though since the Intel HD (no model #) is pretty weak.

If you cannot afford both a CPU and a GPU, then you may have to look at Richland generation APUs like the A4-4300. It is still a weak CPU, but at least the integrated graphics is better.

Thank you! I am on a tight budget and I am only 15, so my understanding of hardware is slight off, I do apologize.

I can afford a GPU, something around a gtx 660 or 650 TI

No problem. When buying computer parts, it is always best to save up a bit more and get something solid then buying right away and getting something inadequate. Good luck, and btw, I'm 14 :p

Get the 650 ti and a solid i3 processor or better is my recommendation.

I told my brother about the Pentium, and he has built a new computer, but he still has the Pentium rig but BF4 runs fine on it. I will just stick with the Pentium as I am not a hardcore gamer. It will do me until I can afford an i3, I have to keep my game development company running so that makes it harder as well. Thanks everyone :)

You will be able to run most single player games, but anything multiplayer will lag with too many players. except star trek doesnt seem to... If you have a backlog of titles
you havent played, like everything in the orange box, bioshock 1 and two, left for dead, doom 3, dead space , mass effect 1 and two, fallout 3 & new vegas, the list is endless. That cpu will handle those games well, but try to get the haswell version. Its a G3220 ,about the same money. These games will keep you busy for months. You can play startrek online no problems too. Then you can save up and watch out on ebay, because novatech sell slightly used i5 4430's on ebay for £99. I just bought one.
Hope this advice helps, I am in the u.k. too, and the prices are different to the states, The amd chips hardly save anything. Anyway, good luck.

The pentium is basically a relic of what used to be considered a beast at its time. However, considering it doesn't even compare to an i3, it will fail in any modern scenario.

Pentiums are not relics.

Yes, the Pentium name was used for Intel's mainstream and high end CPUs in the past. However, it is now used for their "value" line of CPUs that sits between the Celeron CPUs and Core CPUs. Basically, it is a Core i3 CPU with no Hyper Threading, probably less cache and a weaker integrated graphics core. These "new" Pentiums are based on Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge or Haswell architectures depending on which generation you are talking about.

If you insist on getting a Pentium, at least get a Haswell Pentium like the g3220 or g3420

Do you plan on upgrading the CPU in the future? Because the Pentium G2020 is going to bottleneck that graphics card a bit compared to a Core i3. The following link has benchmarks for the Pentium G2020 along with other CPUs. The graphics card used is a GTX 680. The GTX 650 Ti / 660 is not as powerful so the bottleneck is not going to be as much as with the GTX 680, but there will still be some bottleneck.

http://www.extrahardware.com/clanky/intel-pentium-g2020...

Below is a link to the interactive game benchmarks from the linked review. It will show you frames rates and if you move the mouse over the CPU's FPS benchmark, it will tell you in percentage how much better or worse other CPUs compares to it.

For example, The Pentium G2020 gets 45.7 FPS with the GTX 680. Moving the mouse on top of the benchmark will use it as a baseline (100%) and you can see that the Core i3-3220 provides 20% better performance. It also gives you a few additional info about the CPU itself.

The only difference between a pentium and an i3 computation wise, is the i3 has hyperthreading and a higher clock speed. I dont even have to look to know that a g3220's computational power is rated at over 3000 cpu marks,(passmark) which is a handful of points above a Q6600 quadcore. Thats plenty good enough for most knockabout single player stuff, esp up to 2010 games. The system I am writing on is an E6600 scoring 1500 points, and that plays em all right at 1200x..
