Upgrading Current spec for PC Gaming

Hi all, long time lurker - first time of signing up

I currently have a PC I build a number of years ago (then yes converted to mac) I am now looking to upgrade my PC using as much as I can keep as possible.

My spec is as follows

Tower - Antec P180 Case
CPU - 2.4ghz Q6600 Quad core
Motherboard - P35 Diamond
Power Supply VX450
Graphics Card - Geforce 8400 GS
Hard Drive 320 Seagate
Audio Card - M-Audi Delta Audiophile

I am aware I will probably need to update most of this. Ideally I am Looking for something that will last for a good number of years with current games, cost around the same as the current Next Gen Consoles (£400-500) and also look better than next gen consoles else I might as well buy one….

Are you sure it'd be cheaper over time. I know a pc build may cost a few hundred more than a console, but at double the price for games (in most cases) surely it would work out cheaper. I've avoided most games on PS3 as I can't justify the cost per game.

It is really a total hit or complete miss. pc might go through a time of big developments again which makes you spent hundreds to keep up with the gaming industry while consoles sit there and blocks everything (like 2008-2012). but on the otherhand this console generation could already be replaced in 3-5 years because of the weak sauce specs they begun with this time (really they want to last 7 years with low end specs, last generation atleast started with decents specs for that time).

Very true, I still think i'd like to shift to PC (again mainly because of the price per game issues). If I was to up the budget to £500 GBP ($800) dollars would that suite ?

you could make a decent start with that budget. you'd have to game on medium grahpics tho until you have the money to upgrade to a decent gpu. The best build for that budget with the future in mind would be a build which is more shifted towards the cpu. This is so you don't have to upgrade cpu and motherboard, but just the gpu if you want more power in games.

is your current RAM 8+gb ddr3 at 1333 or higher? if so feel free to drop the RAM and upgrade gpu to 270x or even a gtx 760 if possible.
i left out the storage and operating system asuming you can re-use your current :)

Thanks for that, so you're saying the CPU and motherboard will last for a good few years with new games etc.. and it's the graphics card I will need to update.

I'll save myself an extra 40 quid if I keep my Antec p180 tower ?

for an extra £40 quid I might as well get the top end GTX 760 if it'll be significant over the others ?

if your antec p180 is still up for the task (ATX form factor for mobo/psu) you'd do good to use it again. the 760 is indeed a good upgrade over the 7870. i can't say if it will last for a certain amount of years but these specs are very similar to the specs of a steam box which should last +/- 2 years. don't expect to game on high/ultra for 2 years tho :p
