Hi people,
I'm looking at picking up a new Canon printer within £150 (say $200 USD) but not sure what would be best. It's just for occasional home use - printing the odd invoice or event invitation. Reliability is the most important factor, but print quality is definitely a consideration. Presumably any colour laser will be superior in quality to any colour inkjet? Can I expect toner to go further than inkjet cartridges? Any guidance would be welcome.

Any particular reason behind Canon? Also, is the budget based on the most you can afford or a certain level of quality/ features? I only ask as £150 for an at home inkjet is quite high.

Andrew, reason for Canon is that I was impressed by this:

And the budget being what it is allows for colour lasers as an option. I've heard that the quality gap has closed a bit in the past few years, but presumably I'll still get far better quality from a laser?

geofelt, thanks for the recommendation. Feed issues are definitely an important consideration since they've been the single biggest issue with my current printer. Canon seems to do an excellent job in reliability so hopefully any Canon will be a safe bet in that regard.

I couldn't agree more that for the budget and your requirements Canon would be the make I'd go for. I have had an MP470 for about 4 years now and it's never missed a beat. The difference between laser and inkjet, whilst it has closed somewhat over recent years, is something of a myth - whilst the specs on paper may look appealing the reality is that for the same money you'd spend on a budget laser would be much better spent on a mid range inkjet with better quality and more features.

With all this in mind I'd recommend the following:

http://www.printerland.co.uk/Canon-Pixma-MG6350-P130560.aspx

http://www.printerland.co.uk/Epson-Workforce-WF-3010DW-P130356.aspx

If you'd like a dedicated printer, the Epson would be ideal. Build quality and reliability to better Canon's and whilst the consumables are considerably more expensive they do offer better quality and Epson's are much more efficient with ink than any other brand. Very shy on your budget but leaving a good amount spare for replacement inks.

For a mfd, at £100, the Canon is a bargain. I wouldn't spend more than that given the current ranges as anything more is not well justified for the cost difference.

If you do end up buying from Printerland, I would highly advise contacting them to discuss you enquiry as they are good for 10-10% negotiating.

I have always been an Epson user - up until 6 months ago when it died. Replaced with Canon MG5350 and very pleased with results it gives.(bought from PC World when they matched it against Argos (next door) who had it at same price and then knocked 10% off !!

Thanks for the helpful responses! I bought the printer on the 19th though, before I saw those last two messages. Went with a Canon Pixma IP7250 (I think it was around £60 from Ebuyer) and I'm pretty happy with it. Setting it up for Wi-Fi was quick and painless and text print quality is exceptional (looks like laser), though only when using high quality paper (on the cheap paper it did not look great). Only complaints are that photos come out pretty dark and it's incredibly slow. But I'm a fairly patient chap so overall I'm pleased :)
