I want to upgrade to W8.1 and im running windows 7 right now. I'm just curious about if ill be able to run my programs i currently have on my PC. Is W8.1 sort of backwards compatible when it comes to installing programs and using them? I also am curious about what will happen with my steam games when i upgrade. I have about 50 steam games installed. Will i be able to run my games on W8.1? and will i be able to transfer the saves for some games?

Many would consider going to 8.1 from 7 a downgrade..
But if you doing an upgrade.. most of your programs should continue to work..
Run the upgrade assistant which should highlight potential issues... and some, older programs may not work.
Steam itself will work.. individual games in steam will work or not depending on their individual compatibility with win 8.1
but those that work.. your saves should work.

Good luck.. just take a backup in case you want to go back to Win 7 as I did.

8 and 8.1 is almost 100% backwards compatible. I've not found anything that runs under 7, that will not run under 8/8.1.

I have a meager Steam collection, but no issues so far.
