This is the first time I've ever had trouble with a HDD (yeah, lucky me) so I'm not sure where to begin.

I have a Windows 7 desktop with a SSD/HDD setup and for the past two days the HDD has been malfunctioning. For no apparent repeatable actions that I can detect the HDD will no longer be listed under Computer/hard disk drives and of course, no applications or data on the HDD can be used or accessed. It's just gone. This has not happened while using anything on the HDD, so no crashes of any sort, but has been noticed when attempting to access data on the HDD.

A restart resolves the problem. For how long I am not sure.

So, is this clearly a hardware issue? Is this a sign that the drive will soon lock up and fail completely? Should I copy all data on the drive (it's not essential data, games/music) and start a warranty replacement process? Any tools or troubleshooting I can do to determine what is actually happening?

Cheers.

Check the sata and power cables are connected properly. Change ports and use a different cable from the powersupply.

Run chkdsk *drive letter*: /R in CMD

Or download the manufactures SMART checking tool, from western digital or whoever.
