One simple program is this, Core temp:
http://core-temp.en.softonic.com/
It also has a gadget available for windows 7 which is tiny and can show you the CPU temperature from the desktop while the main program runs in the background. It has also got inbuilt overheat protection so it would shut the computer down if it reaches a certain temperature which you can set.
One neg point is it will only monitor CPU temperature.

If you want to monitor all the temperatures from cpu to mobo to HDD and also fan speeds then you can get this:
http://www.hwinfo.com/
it also has a gadget which runs with win 7.

Its very good. I'm using it for past one year with absolutely no issues from my antivirus, antimalware or firewall programs.

Follow either links and you'll get an image and details of the programs scope, Core temp is a modest light weight prog with crucial data and HWMonitor will come very near telling you temps about everything there is in your cases.

Core temp also has features that allow you to ad a temps display to your taskbar, which is nice.

Well as i mentioned in my earlier post, coretemp only monitors the cpu temp but the other link that i have provided of "HWinfo", provides every possible temp your motherboard can detect and also many other cool stuffs.
