Alright,

At the mo I have 6 Gb (3x2Gb) and I'm planning on getting more of the same to full up all slots on mobo (6 triple channel available, 3x2) for better performance.

Is it as straight forward as just stuffing it in? (when computer is off, I might not have much of a clue but I know that much!) then it'll be recognised?

System;
CPU: i7 920
Ram: 6Gb (3x2Gb) 1600GHz
GPU: GTX 670
Power: 750 w

P.S. Think I'm doing the right thing for performance? it's only 60 quid after all! After the RAM I was thinking over overclocking the CPU but will need better cooler and at least some idea of what would be good settings and how to stress test etc.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Solution
yes indeed. your 920 is a 2009 cpu and 670 a 2012 gpu by overclocking i7 920 you can almost match up the performace of newer more capable models. not that its not strong enough but close the gap and gain the power needed for the latest and upcoming games delaying a possible upgade.

sufficient cooling and temp monitoring is the key for an healthy and succesful overclock!

Had a quick look, easy, just "ram" it home :)

That main thing I was concerned about was have to mess around in the mobo setting but looks like don't need to bother with that, just put it in and away you go.

Thanks

I know but overclocking scares me, putting more ram in I can handle (as I found I don't need to mess around with any settings so easy).

Thanks for the reply

you buy the extra ram . it will be needed sortly. it may give you a bit of a increased performance but more like a general boost. better star looking for overclocking guides youll get a great deal of boost in current and upcoming titles. isnt that scary it just needs a bit of a study. im not talking about breaking any speed records, just something more accesible. the gpu is a lot easier to overclock.you can start from here http://www.techradar.com/news/computing-components/processors/beginner-s-guide-to-overclocking-1040234
about the ram use cpu-z or an other program to determine the ram specs and if you cant find the same 3*2 gb kit just find another with the same cl timings , mhz and voltage to avoid any compatability problems

I can get the exact same ram on-line so compatibility shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for the link, I'll have a read but I thought that my CPU would need overclocking more than my GPU?

Hi,

It's been a while I know but just thought I'd let you know I took your advice and over clocked my CPU to 3.6, with a H55 and it stays around 50 DegC

IT'S AWESOME, noticed the difference in speed straight away, everyone should do it!!!

Thanks!!!

that was quite a boost wasnt it!? really glad you worked it out! ;)
