Hi, guys.

An old guy with an old computer. Q6600, 2.4GHz (probably can overclock) in a Gigabyte motherboad with 8GB ram.

I know I should upgrade to an I5, but would like to try upgrading my video card and sticking to my existing processor.

I have read that SkyRim is processor intensive so too much video card is not profitable.

What video card do you all suggest (anything will be better than my Nvidia 8600GT!) ?

TIA,
Larry

@ thdarkshadow, Better put it this way, we cant do a thing as the OP have already purchased it. Tell me, did you ever find any good reviews from any reputable sites like Hardware Secrets, Jonnyguru, Hardocp. And I am also not comparing the unit with Gold/Platinum, but you will find far better PSU's at almost same price range of Bronze quality. So why compromise with quality ?

Another thing, output power is not the ultimate or only thing that matters, that unit will output 750W one way or another so no question about it, the only question is for how long and under what temperature, as the caps are only rated 30/40C.

Some OEM PSU's are not that bad as you mentioned, they will serve you for years and not only Logisys there are hundreds...
The HD7770 is a decent enough card but Skyrim does prefer Nvidia hardware, so if it's not going to push the budget too hard I'd suggest either a GTX650 (little slower than the 7770) overall) or the GTX650Ti (a little faster than the 7770 overall).
Any of those three would be a good choice just be sure the installed power supply has the single 6 pin PCI-E lead and 450 Watts out put to keep 'em fed.

Corsair CX series is not that good at all (except CX 430), budget oriented PSU's so not the best in stressful situation. But the PSU will do it for you if you are not that unlucky, so don't worry much.

From wattage standpoint a 450W decent PSU will be enough for your system.

Since your CPU is old as you know it for yourself also, a modern day powerful GPU may bottlenecked by your CPU, so HD 7750/7770/7790/7850 and somewhat risky GTX 650Ti Boost 2GB will be your best bet depending upon your budget.

Here is a simple comparison between your current GPU and HD 7750(some people say this site is not that good) but still look at it, you will know that to play your desired games you wont need that much of a powerful GPU.

Good luck.

The CX series isn't near THAT bad. They are not top of the line or low end. Right in the middle. I wouldn't run two mid to high end GPUs in Crossfire/SLI but that PSU will run any single GPU and any CPU with overclocks with ease.

As to the GPU I would go up to a 650 TI boost/7850 but no more unless you are for sure planning to upgrade the CPU soon.

@ OP, sorry I made a mistake its not the CX 430 its the CX 400 the decent one.

@ thdarkshadow, CX series (original) Cheap, budget-oriented units. Fixed cables, rated at 40C, mixed Japanese and Taiwanese caps, 80+, 3 year warranty.

CX (v1) "Builder" series Very cheap, budget-oriented units. Fixed cables, rated at 30C, mixed Taiwanese and Chinese caps, non-80+, 2 year warranty.

CXv2 "Builder" series Cheap, budget-oriented units. Fixed cables, rated at 30C, mixed Taiwanese and Chinese caps, 80+, 3 year warranty. Same as CXv1 but with upgraded switching components and +12V rectifiers.

CX750/M is made by CWT.

yeah its budget that means it is not meant to compete with platinum certified PSUs. they are priced fairly and are often on sale. I am not saying you will get 750w out of it what I am saying is if he sticks with one gpu then he wont ever have to worry about it as it supplies more than enough power. Not trying to start an arguement but its not "not good at all" as you put it. not good at all are PSUs that come stock in a pc or something like logisys.

I myself used and using some no-name PSU's for years now, nothing bad has happened so far, but that doesn't mean they are of great quality. And I am still saying CX series are not that good in stressful situations.
