Basically as the thread title would suggest I'm currently in search of a speaker system that has multiple optical-in ports for my gaming PC. The purpose of this is so I can plug my video game consoles into the speaker system as well.

The consoles I'm trying to plug in are the PS4 and the PS3.

Now, I'm not really 100% sure if this is what I need exactly but I'm open to suggestions on what I need to do to accomplish this.

You most likely won't find a PC type stand alone speaker system with more than 1 optical in. You would have better luck looking at high end stereo receivers and buying speakers to go with it (although I can't remember seeing any in the 300-500$ range with more than 1 optical input when I was looking last summer)

If you're open to other options, may I suggest buying one of the "home theater" stereo packages (you can get a quality unit on sale for 200-300$) that has an optical input (which is exactly what I did :) ) and buying multiple optical cables and just attaching the component you want sound from when you are using it? Anyway, that is how I run my setup and I find it fine (although I rarely use the optical out from my PC as I also...

Think I can get a desk big enough for all that? :p

You know what I mean right? like this:

That's the exact same one I'm using (except mine is DVD not Blue-ray). I didn't want to put my monitor on top of it (my monitor was a tiny bit to low and no height adjustment on the stand) so I bought a small 3'x2.5'x10" shelf, left the backboard off, adjusted the height of the top shelf (lowered it to fit my PS3) and put my dvd/receiver part in the narrow middle shelf. Here this is the shelf: http://www.shopxscargo.com/product_catalogue/cat_product_details.asp?category_id=9&product_code=28529&sub_category_1_id=36&category=Bookcases

Anyway, the dvd/receiver unit and the front left, right and center speakers should fit on the desk and the sub-woofer can go on the ground underneath. Then put the rear speakers wherever you were going to put the ones from the PC speaker system.

Or if you get one of the more expensive 1000W Sony ones, the front and rear, right and left speakers come on stands (I think they are between 3-4 feet high plus the speaker) and you can just put the center on top of the sub under the desk ;)

HA! I helped solve your desk space issue too! . I'm awesome IMHO :p
