How can I format the drive of a Compaq S3000NX when the computer won't boot?

I have a Compaq S3000NX computer,13 years old. The computer won't boot into Windows XP. I suspect that there is a corrupt file, which is why I would like to re-format the drive. Can anyone suggest a free simple bootable re-formatting program so that I can wipe the drive out and re-install Windows XP? Thanks...Carl

put the windows xp disc in the drive and boot to the disc. then go through the steps to reinstall windows. at one point it will give you the option to format the drive.
