Ah, so this is a different computer than your laptop -- I didn't get that point with the first post.

On the first half of your issue, does your laptop now detect your router with the SSID entered?

And now on the adapter problem --

You can run a virus check, but that is not a common symptom of a virus AFAIK, more likely an antivirus software issue.

Two things to do for the computer that will not allow you to enable the adapter. First open services.msc (with a right click run as admin you can find it by typing its name in the start button search box) and check that the entry for WLAN Autoconfig is set to automatic.

If that doesn't fix it then try the following sequence: disable any antivirus or security programs, uninstall the...

And it broadcasts an SSID?

I would download and run the old free home version of inSSIDer from HERE and run it to get more details on all the surrounding wireless networks, including yours. After install, run it and check the networks tab for all the wireless signals by channel and strength.

tried that and still didnt work. i think it has something to do with my computer and not the adapter. My original wireless adapter had connection issues so i bought a new USB wireless adapter. That didnt pick up any networks so i thought it was broken. I returned it and bought a PCI wireless adapter and still no networks show.

when i got to "change adapter settings" there are 2 icons. local area connection and Wirless network connections which is greyd out and disabled. I right click and enable it. It says enabled but for some reason its still greyed out and disabled. Do i have a virus or something?
