NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GS not working (BSOD)

I have an ASUS G50V laptop with an NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GM, running Windows Vista Home Premium. It worked fine for about 3 years, but about a year ago it stopped working. I started it up, and, after the loading screen, it simply failed to display anything at all. I tried restarting again, and it came up with a BSOD, and then shut off. I always saw "nvlddmkm.sys" in the message, but BlueScreenView suggests that "dxgkrnl.sys" and "Null.SYS" are also involved in the crash.

Until recently, this BSOD would come up every time that I would turn on the computer not in safe mode. I tried many times reinstalling, updating, and rolling back the drivers for the graphics card, but this never prevented the crash.

However, yesterday I tried performing a clean installation of the latest version of the drivers, and, upon restarting, the computer was mostly back to normal. It seemed, though, that I couldn't access most of the files on my hard drive, since I had connected it to another computer to access my files and changed the file permissions. I installed a "Take Ownership" option for the right-click menu in Windows Explorer, and used it on my User folder. However, after several hours, this resulted in a message saying that "Windows Operating System has stopped responding", and my computer completely froze.

Upon restarting the computer, it seemed that it had stopped using the graphics card altogether. Going to the device manager and checking out the properties for the display adapter gives the status "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available." Not surprisingly, there was no solution available.

I tried reinstalling the device drivers. Doing this through Windows yielded an error, "Windows found driver software for your device, but encountered an error installing." Reinstalling the drivers using NVIDIA's installer while out of safe mode leads back to the BSOD again. Reinstalling the drivers using NVIDIA's installer while in safe mode leads to the "Windows has stopped this device ... etc." problem again.

Is there anything short of reinstalling Windows (or another operating system) that I can try to fix this problem?

UPDATE:

I took out the hard drive and put in a new one and installed Fedora. Upon booting from the DVD, the Fedora loading screen came up briefly, then the screen became a mess reminiscent of a graphical glitch in an NES game. I tried several times, but the same issue occurred. I eventually tried starting in basic graphics mode, which worked. After I had installed Fedora on the new hard drive, I tried installing the NVIDIA graphics drivers. The install was apparently successful, but upon rebooting, the screen loaded, then went blank like before.

Is it a problem with the graphics card itself? The computer had major heat problems, often (according to the internal thermometer) reaching temperatures above 100 C (not Fahrenheit). Could the heat have broken it over time?

Thanks for your reply.

I believe I already tried cleaning the RAM, and it made no difference. I suppose if it's a problem with hard drive, there's not much I can do besides get a new one, though.

Still, I kind of doubt that it's the memory or the hard drive, though. I have no trouble accessing and reading my other files now, and I can install new software just fine. It's also not going any slower than it normally does doing most things.
