I'm debating between an Asus r9 290 DirectCUII and MSI r9 290 gaming, but since reviews are sparse, and those cards are not that easy to come by in the states, was wondering anyone else that's outside of the states, like in the UK or something have any input for those two cards? To be honest, I got kind of scared away by Asus's DirectCUII after tom's hardware had those temps of the cards in a closed case. But some people have been saying that their 290x direct cu II's have been doing well in terms of cooling, like around 65C under load. But then again, I am looking at the 290. Any input would be appreciated.

Wait, only now did I see he's talking about the 290X.

The 290X is the highest power consuming single-gpu card I've EVER seen. It uses up to 400W. Even if you have an antec Lanboy Air case with all the fans the thing won't run at "cool" standards for anyone.
I wouldn't touch the 290X unless i fitted it with a water block. While I Always stand for Amd, I just stop here, because even the slightly slower 780 uses 250W and is much cooler than the 290X. Or the 780Ti if you want the fastest in the world.

In any way, there are 3 things you learned:
-the 290x is an oven
-the 290 and 290x are really different cards. Either way GO WITH ASUS.
-No card performs well in a closed case with no airflow.

ANY graphics card will overheat if it has no airflow. It needs cool air and needs to dispose of hot air. With a case with no airflow, the graphics card reuses the same air, that gets hotter and hotter.

Cpu and Gpu temps decrease drastically when having decent airflow given to them.

Be wary of the direct CU II, on the 290 and 290x, Its simply an nvidia 780 clone heatsink and doesnt even make proper contact with certain chips on the PCB. They haven't designed this for the ATI card layout, they did the same with the 280x.

I have the MSI gaming r9 290m top temps of 68*c and top fan speed of 44%, super quiet :D This is with a 120mm rear exhaust and a 120mm front intake.

1077mhz core clocks, and custom PCB.

The Toms hardware closed case test on the poor direct CUII had a rear exhaust fan, so the results are also concerning.
