I plan to get a 1440p monitor (qnix qx2710 @120hz).
Now I'm deciding between a Asus r9 280x DC2 and the Sapphire tri-x r9 290.
Tri-x is (where I live) ~510$ and the 280x is ~370$.
Is the tri-x worth it for 1440p (and 120hz) gaming or is the 280x sufficient?

The 280x should be the sweet spot for price/performance. If you actually want to push 120 FPS in newer games both cards will struggle though.

I'm running that exact monitor with a single GTX 760 and in older games i can get 120+ fps, but on new games like Tomb Raider and Metro it struggles. Just depends on the games you're going to play.

R9 290! especially if it has a custom cooler. but performance will vary from game to game.
I have 2 r9 280x and a 1080p 144hz monitor and i get 110 fps average on bf4 (mid settings), about 25fps on the star citizen hangar module (ultra settings, game unoptimized).

I upgraded to a 780 ti from a 780 and noticed a huge difference while 1440p gaming... I suggest a 780 ti however if you're a AMD fan get the 290 tri-x because you need as much power as you can get for 1440p gaming if you like to play with high settings.

I run that exact same monitor @ 96Hz with a 7970 i.e. a 280x. I find it to work really well, I play BF4 on high/ultra averaging 50+ fps, I can't remember exact numbers but it's pretty good. The trick is to turn your AA down to 2X or so, with such small pixels it doesn't need to be high.

If you have the money the 290 would be a great card, just sucks that right now the prices are inflated because bot coin miners have been buying up all the stock. The 280x should only cost $310 and the 290 around $400.

BF4 is optimized for AMD Graphics cards that's why the game runs 7970 however the gtx 780 ti beats everything AMD has to offer today in BF4 according to benchmarks.

That's right because of Mining the amd Cards are overpriced - I've seen brand new Zotac 780's on promotion for 460 in Canada, only 40 - 60 dollars more than a 280x and significantly faster then a 280 and neck to neck with the 290 according to benchmarks.

Yeah I know the prices are high, but here in Malaysia the 780 cost over 600$ (Asus Dc2 costs ~680) and the Asus Gtx 780ti ~810$ and that's no where in my budget (Just checked 1 seller, might be less). At least amd is less expensive than in Europe (lived in Germany) .

For 1440p 2x AA (Or off)is fine?
Thx for your opinions, will probably go for a 290 trix then :D

I've never tried a 290 however based on reviews and specifications it seems like it will give you decent experience with a 1440p monitor.

The Trix is a non reference card so it's doesn't sound like a jet engine and it's doesn't produce enough heat to heat the whole house and is faster than the deference cards.

I suggest 2x aa with a 1440p monitor however for games like crysis 3 you might want to use 1x or 2x smaa.
For Tomb raider fxaa.

I hope you're satisfied with your purchase
