Hello TH!I recived a free pc from a friend but it looks like the hard drive is dead. Would I be able to use the hardware and just put in a new 500gig drive and install a new os? Thanks!

Yes, if it really is just the hard drive that is dead. It also depends on how old the PC is and why type of hard drive interface it supports.
There are lots of reasons a PC can be "dead."
