Hello,

I have been having some issues with a few of my games where my computer will instantly shutdown and restart. I'm thinking it can't be good for it because it is such a fast shutdown, like someone pulled the power cable out. So far I've had this happen everytime I try to play Lego Marvel, Cubeworld, and DayZ:Standalone. I can play most games like Battlefield 4, Crysis 3, Assassin's Creed:Black Flag without any issues whatsoever. I have monitored my temps and ran furmark a dozen times and I never get a reset. My voltages look fine on my PSU as well. I don't know what could be causing this so I definitely could use some help.

It is strange that while Lego Marvel will restart within a minute of two or playing, DayZ can sometimes go for a good 30 minutes. Cubeworld only causes a reset when I'm around water for some reason. These definitely aren't the most demanding games in the world as far as I can tell.

Here are my specs:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Intel Core i7-3770K CPU @ 3.50GHz
16GB Patriot 1600MHz DDR3
2 x EVGA GTX 780 w/ ACX Cooling
OCZ Fatal1ty 1000W PSU
Coolermaster HAF X Case - Aircooled
Corsair H100 CPU Heatsink

So it's a restart not a shutdown? And you said you already checked your temperatures and they're fine?

Instant restart during gaming could be caused by a bad PSU. But first I would think this is a bluescreen. Windows is now set to automatically reboot on BSOD. Go to Advanced System Settings, then to Startup and Recovery and uncheck "Automatically Restart". If it's really a bluescreen next time it happens it will remain displayed on the screen so you'll be able to note the error message. BSOD are often caused by bad drivers and since you're using SLI it's less stable than a single card (more drivers issues with SLI). You could also try to remove one of your 780 and run the same problematic game and see if it still crashes with just one card. You could also try a different driver version. If you already run the latest, maybe try an older driver it might be more stable for you.

I do believe it's a shutdown, followed by a restart. It completely shuts off then restarts automatically after a second or two. I ran Furmark with all the settings max out for about 15 minutes and one of my graphics cards maxed out at 90 degrees Celsius. I know that's hot but the max operating temp is 95 degrees Celsius for these cards (from what I read at least). The system didn't shut down at that point but successfully finished the benchmark. The second card never exceeded 85 degrees.

So I went into advanced options and disabled the automatic restarts and the system still shuts down instantly with no BSOD. I checked the Nvidia drivers and they have been updated to the latest available drivers. I disabled SLI rendering so I'm just using one card now and I am still experiencing the problem. Cubeworld ran flawlessly once I disabled the SLI, but Lego Marvel still causes the restart.

When the system shutsdown it's almost as if it's blown a fuse, because it is so quick and it just clicks off. When running Lego Marvel I do notice an usually loud metallic whining noise from inside the case. I'm assuming that its the graphics card firing up, and I've read that it's normal. I'm just wondering if that could be of any importance. Next I will try to backtrack my driver versions and update this post! Thank you all again!

System restarting like that under load (during gaming for example) could be an indication of a bad PSU. Do you have another power supply you could use to test? It needs to be powerful enough to run 1 x GTX-780 (don't need to use 2 for the moment until the problem is solved because we want to take SLI out of the equation for now).

I second MC. A PSU is likely to cause those types of shutdowns.

I recently had this issue too, where there was a click and all the power instantly went off. Turns out my CPU was hitting its heat limit. I'm assuming you measured all the temps, right? If your GPU is getting right next to its limit, heat could be the issue for a different part.

What is your CPU temp under full load?
