Im sure this has been asked a million times over.
I went out and purchased a galaxy geforce gt 640 card for my dell inspiron 530.
I have the latest bios update, the latest mobo driver, and i have done everything i know to make it work. the car seems to be working fine as i can get to the bios and boot menu fine. if it wasnt working why would i see those right?

well i get to the bios then let it go thinking its going to boot and nothing happens. i see nothing. no display. the computer refuses to recognize the new card. i swapped it out for my old 8500gt and it does the same thing. even though the pc was running fine with the 8500gt installed. I am growing impaitent with this new card. how do i fix this issue so i can get back to gaming?

Solution

The problem is that the basic power supply of your Inspiron 530 will not be able to support this card. You need 1 additional PCI-E power connector from your PSU to connect into your 7770 and unfortunately your PSU doesn't have that. So you would need a new PSU as well.

I would suggest you go with the Radeon 7750 instead since it doesn't require any additional connection from the PSU, it takes all its power directly from the PCI-Express slot. That's probably the most powerful card you could get without having to replace your PSU.

So you're able to get into the BIOS with the GT 640?

And now you're saying putting back the old card produces the same thing? So even with the old 8500GT you can access the BIOS, but unable to display Windows after?

At least, if you're able to access the BIOS with both card this is a good sign. What Windows version are you running?

win vista 32 bit.i can easily get to the bios and i see that but after i hit exit the monitor stays on and does not show the windows loading screen or anything after that. like i said the card functions just does not display the win loading screen or anything past. the computer stays on too.

Reboot and right after the Dell logo from the BIOS disappears start pressing F8 repeatedly, that's the signal for Windows to boot into Safe Mode which doesn't load any driver at all so it should be able to display.

in safe mode now with on board graphics. i tried installing the nvidia driver and it says no nvidia hardware is in the machine but the 640 is installed.

the machine clearly sees that there is a card installed. it says unsupported graphic somthing or other. because i have the onboard graphics connected ot the monitor and the dvi connected to the card.

No it's backward compatible. And this doesn't explain why putting back the old card doesn't fix it...

I would reset the BIOS to default settings and then put back the 8500GT and try to get it to work again.

okay say i get the old card to work again, then what do i do if i try to swap back to the new card and it doesnt work? I dont want to spend hours messing with this machine if it would be easier to just get a new kit and start over with the new card in a new machine.

if that will solve all of my problems then yes.. i like this machine and id like to fix the issue but id rather put what little time i do have into building a machine that will work properly with this card, have the option for future upgrades and still be able to play the dew games i do play. is this doable for under $400?
I seen a nice barebone kit on tigerdirect for under 400 but it doesnt look like it has much room for upgrade.

Of course it will it's a new PC haha!

But if it's the card that is defective it won't work into any PC because well... it's defective lol.

However, if your new PC has onboard video at least you can still use it if the card is defective. And then you got proof and you can send it back to the store or RMA it for an exchange.

so the card can still be defective even is it will display the bios screen when connected from the dvi port on the card to the monitor?

i have determined that the card is faulty. the computer now runs fine with the 8500gt card in. and is working as it did before. will be returning this card and never buying a galaxy graphics card again.
