My set up is fx 6300, gtx 660 sc 850 watt psu and a 1600x900 monitor (will get 1080 or better soon). Need to know if going to the 770 for $329 is a good option. I play splinter cell black list, tomb raider and other third person games.

Solution

It is alright don't worry too much the FX 6300 has a lot of power.

When you're going to get an 1080p monitor you're going to get even less bottleneck than you'll get on 1600x900 because at 1920x1080 the games are more GPU bound.

The GTX 770 is a great option although you'll need to overclock your fx 6300 to prevent bottleneck.

your good to go!

Don't forget to pick a solution XD

The 770 is overkill for gaming at 1080. Have you looked at the 760 or 670's? Both pretty much the exact same card with some clock and memory speed changes. You'll find the 760's/670's for ~$230 USD and will be able to max out just about any game at 1080.

In some games there might occur some slight bottlenecking from your fx 6300.

but games like battlefield 4 are greatly optimized for AMD's hexa and octa cores cpu's so 4,1ghz will be enough for battlefield 4 but might be not for other less good optimized games. If i were you i should take the gtx 770 it's a great gpu and it has the Nvidia reliability :p

If you don't need the new GPU immediately, I would wait for the new Nvidia lineup to start coming out and then pick up a 700 series for a lot less or a good high end 800 series card.

At 4.1ghz You'll still see bottlenecking with a 770 or higher GPU. Is picking up another 660 (used or refurbished units for ~$130 USD) and running it in SLI an option for you?

Exactly what I was going to say. If I look at the games you're playing, your 660 should max all of them at 1080p. Really no need to upgrade.

There's no such thing as future proof. If you don't need to upgrade now there's no sense in doing it. Usually I wait for a game that I really like to struggle for me to justify an upgrade. Then I get the best bang for my bucks on what is currently on the market.

The GTX-770 you're looking at will cost half the price in one year. So why throwing your money at the window and get it now when you don't need it? There will also be new GPU models in a year or two that will outperform it for the same price if you are ready to spend that much. Either get the 770 for half the price, or the new 870 for the same price, but wait until you really need to upgrade that's the only advise I can give you.
