i'm biulding a steam box in the lian li pc q03b case, and i am having trouble picking between these two apus. The 5800k i can get off ebay for cheap, like $80, and i can get the 7850k new for $190. The mobo i can get for the 5800k is also $65 on ebay compared to $100 for a a88x one off newegg. It has to be mini itx. I want to know if a 5800k is that much slower than the 7850k, and if i should get it to build my steam box with this, because i plan on using it for a few years without upgrading. I want it to be as future proof as possible on my budget (which is small). I already have a fx 8320 rig with a hd7850, so i can always stream from that anyway. The total cost of the 5800k machine is much less compared to the 7850k one, so i'm leaning in that direction.

the r7-250 is a single slot card. APUs are able to do something called "hybrid crossfire", that is where the gpu crossfires with the igpu on the APU... so you only need 1 graphics card and 1 apu to do this.

Currently hybrid xfire doesn't work with trinity or richland APUs but it DOES work with Kaveri. the r7-250 will fit your small form factor build just fine, is a power sipper, and will nearly double your graphics power.
the 7850k has a igpu similar to a DDR3 version of a 7750(technically, exact specifications). the 32nm process on the older 5800k has a igpu closer to a 6670. if you want performance to $, the money saved on the 5800k could potentially go to a seperate discrete gpu which overall should be cheaper than the newer motherboard+apu. if you just want no dgpu, the advantage that the 7850k has is that it has a few choices for dual gpu mode as well as that since its GCN, it is compatible with any upcoming game that will utilize Mantle.(the 5800k is VLIW4(?))

I'd get the 7850k... the igpu is about 30% stronger then the one on the 5800k... hybrid xfire actually works on the 7850k as well (something that isn't the case with the 5800k). Throw in the fact that the cpu is about 10%-20% better clock for clock and i'd say it's a better buy on the whole.

Stick a r7-250 on it, it apparently xfires flawlessly with them, and enjoy a very capable gaming machine without even needing to overclock it.
