hi, i have a geforce gtx 560 with an AMD athlon x4 640 cpu, that i plan on upgrading to an AMD fx-8320 cpu, when i play gta 4 with my current fps i get about 30-40 fps when i drive really fast, 27 or so during a gun fight, so i wanted to know if i make this upgrade how much of a better fps performance will i get out of this?

Solution
To help clarify your options, run these two tests:

a) Run your games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.

b) Limit your cpu, either by reducing the OC, or, in windows power management, limit the maximum cpu% to something like 50%.
This will simulate what a lack of cpu power will do.

Go to control panel/power options/change plan settings/change advanced power settings/processor power management/maximum processor state/
set to 50% and see how you do.

You could also experiment with removing one core in the bios. This will tell you how sensitive your games are to the benefits of many cores.

If your FPS drops significantly, it is an indicator that your cpu is the limiting factor, and a cpu upgrade is in order.

It is possible that both tests are positive, indicating that you have a well balanced system, and both cpu and gpu need to be upgraded to get better gaming FPS.

Solution
Your results tell me that you are more limited by your cpu than your graphics card.

Since few games can use more than 2-3 cores, I have my doubts that the 8 cores of a FX-8320 would be a good change. You may get no improvement at all.

Try disabling one of your current cores and see how much difference it makes.
If you see little difference, your games are in the <4 core camp.
A Intel quad will have the fastest cores, even with a lower clock rate.
