Hello there,

What are the main differences when considering power consumption between the old and the new flagship Radeons?

Thank you!

Solution
Get 2 8gb sticks of ram (personal recommendation) otherwise yes, a 1000 watt power supply will do the trick, but if you pay for your power, i wouldnt suggest mining. Not only is the currency going to lose value, the power consumption is usually not worth it unless you have multiple computer systems doing work

Brantyn Gerik: Thank you for your reply! :)

I have one further question: do you think a 1000w power source would be able to support 2 R9s 290x and one 290 running at max 24/7, but not overclocked? The system would be built on an ASRock Z87 KILLER with 2 Kingston 1GB RAM modules and a Celeron G550.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Thank you, Brantyn Gerik for your kind recommendations!
Indeed, I would like to start mining (alt)coins with this setup.
I already have the 290 and would like to testmine some cryptocurrencies before deciding whether to go along and buy the 290xs.
Electricity price is not so high where I live, 18.40 UScents/kWh.

I guess that I'll let future experience decide on this one :)

ok, so while mining your computer with 1 290, will cost you about 9 cents per hour. Now basically during your testmine, time how many hours it takes to get one coin, and then multiply the cost per hour times how many hours it took. compare this to the value of the currency you mined. If it took more time to mine it than was worth it, stop mining, as mining is only getting harder and harder due to the difficulty increasing

Just to be clear, I will mine scrypt-based coins (e.g. litecoins/dogecoins/diamonds), not bitcoins.
That would be illogical.

I'll let you know how it goes. Probably in about one week or so.
