Phenom II X4 965 Overclocking

So i started my overclocking.

My current Freq is 3.6 Ghz
Memory is at 1866 with CAS of 9 10 9 28 G. Skill Ripjaws X 1866 2x4gb
My bus speed is at 234
My Ratio is at 15.5
My voltage is at 1.4
My NB Freq and Volt is at auto.

With this setting i can run Prime 95
With temps of 64c max.
24 hours no problems.

But when i increase my settings to

Freq is 3.7 Ghz
Memory is at 1870+ with CAS of 9 10 9 28 G. Skill Ripjaws X 1866 2x4gb
My bus speed is at 234
My Ratio is at 16
My voltage is at 1.45
My NB Freq and Volt is at auto.

It wont last a more than an hour on Prime 95.
Temps reach 70c Max.

My Cooler is CM TPC 812
My Board is Crosshair V Formula Z
PSU is Cougar 550w.

Any ideas how i can make 3.7 stable or even higher? Do i have to sacrifice my Memory freq in order to attain higher CPU freq without higher temps?

TYIA.

No offense but 3.6ghz and 3.7ghz are pitiful for that CPU, I had mine at 4.3ghz air cooling which was one of the CPUs used to write the guide linked below.

Your settings are holding you back that's a Black Edition CPU there were no 965s released that were not Black Editions so the CPUs multiplier is unlocked, meaning you do not have to overclock the FSB, as a matter of fact overclocking it especially to 234mhz will kill your top end!

That said, your memory speed is also way off for a raised multiplier overclock for that CPU, if your memory is not a solid foundation to build on your multiplier raising is a house of cards!

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers...dition-overclock-guide-raisng-multiplier.html

FSB = 200 times a 20X multiplier = 4.0ghz
Memory 1333mhz at 9,9,9,27 or tighter
Memory 1333mhz at 8,8,8,24 or tighter
Memory 1333mhz at 7,7,7 21
Memory 1066mhz at 6,6,6,18
All memory speed suggestions set with a 2T command rate at 1.50v
I personally would shoot for 1333mhz at the Cas 7 timings if it will run it.
CPU voltage somewhere within 1.375v ~ 1.410v

I was waiting for your reply. Im looking at your old links and it was 404 not found. Got to read your guide then :D haha thanks :D

I added some memory timings for you to try, anything you don't understand in the guide PM me.

What does 2T mean? :)
So even if my memory is rated at 1866 i will go as low as 1333? :D
What programs should i use to test the stability of this freq and timings? :D

How do i change my NB Freq and Voltage?

2T is the command rate of the modules the settings are either 1T or 2T, you'll find these adjustments lower down the list in the memory timings.

Yes it will run at 1333mhz and it's important to drop that down as the CPU memory controller was not designed to run at 1866mhz.

The last question is covered in the guide.

Ohhh I was doing it all wrong all this time. Thats why it cant keep up with my memory speed and causing BSOD.

Looks like i have to wait for an cpu upgrade before i can use 1866 eh? :)).

Haha thanks. Ill try this settings once i get home from work. :D

Hello,

I'm sorry for resurrecting this thread, but I don't think it's better to add another thread to the list for the same topic.

I too have a Phenom II x4 965 BE and PC3 14900 16gb 1866mhz CL9 RAM. I was told by a G.Skill rep that the ram was compatible, but a more educated user tells me that my CPU cannot run this RAM. (AM2+/AM3 cannot run AM3+ ram)

I follow a guide he linked to me here
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2695438/upgrading-...

and took a picture of my rates after tweaking the BIOS here:

I'd like to know I did this correct or was this representative not helping me right?

That doesn't ring any bells. But, I am confident everything went accordingly and my computer is very well off.

According to memory tab of CPU-Z, memory 935mhz value at dual channal # gives me 1866mz or so. I've read someplace that the SPD tab just gives things like limitations and default ranges.
