What GPU will last me 3 years.

I'm looking to build my first computer and i have a person to help me out with it but i was wondering about the parts. In my journey i was thinking about how long a GPU would last me and i don't want to replace the card every single year. I want to have a card for at least 3 years mid to high settings with good fps. I already know i'm getting a i7 processor (for multiple reasons i already researched for). For this scenario lets so my budget didn't matter. What would last me for 3 years on those settings? Would i need to get something like the gtx 780 or can i get something cheaper and be happy? (these are for games like bf4 (high to very high) and maybe playing crysis 4 at medium settings since i'm sure unless i dish out 1 grand and my soul i won't be able to play crysis 4 on max settings. Thanks for you help! =D

Let me put your problem like this.

If you bough the 8800 GTS/GTX Nvidia launched at the end of 2006, you could play virtually every game (even Crysis 3 has a DX10 hack) on the market without problems. Yes, it might be in medium-high settings in 720 or low-medium settings in 900p for games in 2013-2014, but you can.

And that was 7 years ago.



Buying a GPU now that will last 3 years? Well, funny, the HD 7970 launched 2 years ago, it still maxes out easily games NOW. So you might as well buy a HD 7870/R9 270 and up or go for Nvidia and buy the GTX 660/750 Ti (when it launches) and up.

PS: Also for future proofing, if you can buy an i7 3770/4770, save some money and buy a 8320/8350. Those 8 threads per CPU will surely help in 2-3 years.

It's a foretelling you are asking for, and that doesn't work like that. GTX780 will last for about 3-5 years degrading from (check today's benches) to medium settings @ "playable" FPS. HD7870, as stated before, or GTX770 will lest you same, -FPS difference they have today. It's hard to say, and to be honest not a very correct question to ask. Ask yourself what you want to play Now, how much you are willing to pay now. In two years GTX780 might perform in GTA6/BF5 like 760 now in GTA5/BF4, after two years they might start optimizing games so well , you wont need a high-end GPU to play it. My cents go for more RAM, 3-4GB , more bandwidth, cooler operation. Bottom line is, there is not so much to choose from, two brands with like 6 cards. I do not prefer one brand over another , but instead of GTX780 I would get R9 290.

And this is why i asked this question -.- lasjdofjwlejfads XD i can't seem to ever find any solid answer to reassure me that buying this graphics card (gtx 780) will be worth it because the growth of games are exponential which means that by this time next year my card may be obsolete for the next years games. It might be pushed so much i could get sent to medium settings right away and then it's like "why the hell did i spend 500 dollars when i could have spent less and then upgraded anyways."

No matter what you purchase, that is going to happen. Nobody knows exactly how long something will last because we don't know if there will be a new DX standard, if games will become ridiculously complicated. We don't know what the effect that Mantle will have on console ports. We don't know a lot of things. For instance, if DirectX11 had not come out, I'd probably still be gaming happily on my twin HD 4870s. I didn't upgrade because I didn't like the performance, I upgraded because I couldn't play DX11-only games. When DX11 first came out years ago, every DX11 game also had a DX9 and DX10 mode. No matter what you buy, it will one day become obsolete in no more than 6 years for one reason or another.

So do you think i should spend the 500 for a gtx780? And do you agree with the guy above about getting the 8 threads?

Again with the future proofing.

Buy a GPU in 2009, either AMD's HD5000 or Nvidia's GTX400. You get a DX11. Microsoft just announced that DX12 will support every DX11 card. So let's see. DX12 will launch in 2015, so that's 6 years of support. Then I supposed DX12 will get AT LEAST 3 years of support.

So there you go. Buy a high-end GPU for the time, like the 5850/5870 or GTX 470/480 and it will easily last you over 9 years in mainstream games.

If you want 3 years, get the top-of-the-line card. It's really as simple as that.

The 780 ti is on NewEgg's "Shellshocker" deal today, which starts at 1:00 in CA time (40 minutes from now).

That can be half off or better, so I would jump on that deal if it brings the 780 ti anywhere near the price of a regular 780. I have he 780 ti, and it's noticeably faster than the 780. You'll love it. Good luck!
