Lost network connection when the weather is cold.

I know this could sound silly. When the weather changes, like today when Northeast is getting a few inches of snow, my home network often would act up too. The router is a WRT54GL. One of the computer is about 50 ft away from the router and connected via cat5 cable. Many times in a year I can suffer total packet loss problem. I can't ping the router either.

What should I do or what should I check to identify what the problem is? Please help.

I have seen the power supply go bad on these routers causing lost packets and internet access. I would recommend upgrading your router instead of spending $30 on a new power supply. Linksys is a good brand, go with an N600 or higher with dual bands.

I would start with the Cat5 cable itself. Try another cable (even if you have to move the OC closer to the router) to see if that resolves the problem. I would also try another port on the router itself.

Do any other systems have this problem or only the one?

Thanks!

This is not an everyday event, but it can be very annoying when happened. Do you think the cable connector (jack) could be a factor? Since it doesn't happen often, I'd like to think it must be very circumstance driven, ie, when the temperature changes.
