AMD FX-9590 vs Intel i7-3930k for desktop virtualization

I am doing a virtualiztion rig for development, some security testing, and light gaming (gotta have some fun). Unfortunately I have been out of hardware for a while so I would love a critique!

The box will have 64 gig of ram, an SSD for the OS and raid for the storage solution. (More details to follow once I get the mobo/cpu hammered out)

I expect to use windows 7 as the host os, and various linux flavors for the guests and virtualbox for the platform. I will probably virtualize a server or two that will be online (pbx and owncloud/git fileserver) at all times then be bringing up other vms based on what project I am playing with at the time.

I am thinking the AMD because it has 8 physical cores (atleast that is how I understood AMD was real where Intel was virtualized) but from the benchmarks it is lagging behind equivalent Intel offerings, I don't mind spending the money but I do not wanna be in the area of diminishing returns. Any advice would be appreciated. THANKS!!!!!

Why would you by the 3930K, when the 4930K is EXACTLY the same price and much more

And if you take my advice: The 9590 uses 220W of power, meaning you'd need a water cooler to keep it overheating on stock speed. I once took my 3930K on 5ghz for a few mins for fun, with a H100i.

Yeah, the 9590 has 8 cores, but they're single core performace is laughable.

Also, you could also get a 3970x, which is more powerful than both 3930k and 4930K, it's VERY...

Intel without a doubt, the 12 threads is outstanding important when working with multiple VM's.
the 9590 already run hot enough, you dont want to push it to its edge.
Intel have been dominate within virtualization(Actually server-marked, but servers normally run multiple VMs)


Other things that is important:
The faster the HDD and SSD the better. VMs really depend on fast drives.

Ram and more ram.

without hyper-threading 5-7 with hyper-threading 10-14.
But everything could change depending on what the VM would be used for.

It will vary, a LAMP server (owncloud), PBX, a linux dev environment, then maybe some test VMs to play with various sys admin/security scenarios. IE adding python 2.4< to CentOS, demonstrating exploits for school, playing with things like node.js.

IT SERIOUSLY COSTS AS MUCH AS A 3930K IN EUROPE! It's a steal, if you ask me, 2nd most powerful CPU in the world for the price of the fifth.
