Windows 7 vs 8.1 for new gaming desktop

Hi all

Im building a new gaming desktop and was wondering about the new windows 8.1, or should I stick with win 7 instead? Price is not an issue here.

Well, in windows 8.1 they added the start button back, but all it does for the moment is take you back to the metro start screen (the screen with all the tiles on it). Microsoft does plan to add a fully functional start button soon though.

I would recommend getting windows 8.1. It's not that much different from windows 7, and it actually has some pretty good performance boosts (ex: windows 8.1 boots faster than 7). Also windows 7 is no longer supported by microsoft. This means no more service packs.

I agree with Donny, and would recommend windows 8.1. However, I believe that Microsoft support for windows 7 won't expire until early 2015, see the link below (near the bottom of the article)

They still provide updates, but they won't be putting out any more service packs. It's a shame really, the only reason that they are dropping support is because windows 7 has about 70% of the market and windows 8 only has about 5%.

I wasn't really looking forward to using Windows 8.1 before i got it but now i really like it. If you're not into the apps or the metro screen the don't use them. You can alter your setting to avoid them, and with free software to add the start menu (such as Classic Shell) then it becomes a lot like the previous versions of Windows.

In terms of gaming i again would go with Windows 8.1. In the future you are only going to run into compatibility issues with older OS, also you may want a game that is a app purchased from the Windows store..
