Hi guys,
I wish to do a clean install of W7 on the first partition of my IDE hard drive and I need to use a SATA DVD drive as the OS source.
I have two DVD drives. The main one is an IDE DVD-RW and the second is a LG SATA DVD-RW drive which has been no problem for years in another computer.
- The IDE DVD writer seems not to like bootable DVD's.
- The Sata DVD writer connects to the motherboard via a cheap Startech PCI interface which means it has NO PROBLEMS reading DVD's - but WILL NOT BOOT them!
AIM
Rather than get a new IDE/SATA PCI card, or DVD unit I want to find a way to boot up the computer (Maybe using Floppy, or a CD using the IDE DVD drive, but then load W7 from the other SATA DVD drive .
It's an old computer but I want to get the last ounce of use out of it, to use it as a spare, but I don't really want to spend anything.

The computer is a 2002 Dell 340 Precison with floppy. I don't think it can boot from a USB because there seems no BIOS entries for booting from USB (v1.1), but I don't know enough and may be mistaken.
Possible way forward?
I was thinking to boot up some sort of bootable OS CD in the IDE drive. This should have a SATA driver which would allow me to select and run the setup.exe file on the W7 DVD disk.
But as you can tell I dont understand enough and need help!

What works....
XP INSTALLS FROM IDE CD DRIVE
I did a runthrough test and did a clean install of XP onto the first partition, using the main IDE CD drive as the souce of the OS disk. i.e The main IDE DVD unit boots XP disks (CD's??) with no problem. .
WINDOWS 7 INSTALLS AS AN XP UPGRADE (not clean install)
From XP I 'upgraded' it to W7 using the SATA DVD (not booting the DVD) which read just fine using XP. This 'upgrade' to W7 does not allow a clean install as you know, and just goes straight into upgrading XP to W7. It installed fine. So I know it works on the computer.
....But I want to do a clean install if possible with no Windows XP leftovers
What does not work properly...
The primary IDE DVD unit should in fact allow me to just boot up the W7 install DVD without a problem, but even though it's newish (6 months) it just doesn't like either of the two retail W7 DVD's , and won't boot or read either. (Incidentally, This was a replacement for a previous identical IDE DVD unit which was DOA.)
The SATA DVD drive connects to the PCI mobo using a cheap Startech PCI interface. Whilst it will not boot it has NO PROBLEMS reading the W7 DVD if the HD runs XP.
