CPU coolers. H100i vs NH-D14?

I have had a lot of problems with the so-called "silent" H100i. Currently, it is not in my possession. As it was making such a load noise, I sent it back and it since has been confirmed as faulty. My only other issue is then the fact that when I did have the H100i the Corsair Link software was absolutely awful. It only detected my H100i once, and I could not control anything. My only worry is that this happens again with the new H100i, or simply that maybe I am expecting too much silence? My old PC was extremely loud (approx. 60 Db), and while I have not measured this one's noise levels, my friend's PC is absolutely silent, even on air cooling. I was wandering to thoughts of simply getting a refund for the H100i and picking up a Noctua NH-D14. The only problem is my Corsair Dominator Platinum. I have 2 dimms filled and a Sabertooth z87. I'm just a little worried that I have limited my choices in terms of CPU coolers with my initial RAM choice. Looking at pictures, I think if I make sure that the fans are orientated in pull on the D14 it should be fine because I will only use 2 dimms-the ones furthest away from the CPU-and I have no interest in more ram, 8gb is plenty enough.
I suppose the ultimate question is-Does anyone have this configuration? Would it fit? I have not been able to do any measurements, but if I do decide against keeping the H100i, I would like a nice silent CPU cooler.
Cheers guys for any advice

Water cooling is generally not quieter than air cooling, and often in fact makes a little more noise. Here's what Tom's Hardware found when comparing the NH-D14 with a few water cooling kits:

Ok, so I'm pretty sold on the Noctua, but would it work with my RAM? Noctua's compatibility chart says that the D14 isn't compatible with the dominator platinum, but I presume they mean if all dimm slots are filled? And as I say I will move one of the fans to the other side of the heat sink on the D14
