I know there's a lot of posts about this topic, and they've answered most of my questions but one. Which cpu will last longer? If i'm going to be spending this kind of money on a new cpu i want it to perform well as long as possible. Which cpu will outlast the other performance wise? Will hyper threading be really common in the future, making the i7's performance outlast the i5? Or by the time games, and programs will benefit from hyper threading the cpu will be so slow compared to the new ones that it will no longer benefit from its hyper threading advantage?
Thanks for the answers.

You could go for a Xeon1230v3 as kind of a middle option. It's essentially the i7 4770 - it turbos to 3.7GHz which is only 200MHz under the i7' 3.9. It also doesn't have integrated graphics (which are disabled when you use a dedicated graphics card anyway) and it consumes less power.

The i5 4670 is a great cpu and will be for the forseeable future. I would recommend the i5 4670k so you can overclock. But if you will be doing video editing. rendering and all types for heavywork definatly go for the i7. Both cpus are on the lga1150 socket and intel are releasing broadwell next year on the socket so you could always upgrade if you wanted to.
