I just received and installed the XFX HD 7870 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150605&nm_mc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel&cm_mmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel-_-Content-_-text-_-

My intention was to use it for my 4 monitor PC setup (2 20", 1 27", and 1 30"). With this graphics card I am only able to have 3 monitors displayed at a time, even though all 4 monitors can be detected. I have read in other threads that Eyefinity can only support 3 monitors.

This graphics card comes with 2x Mini-Display port, 1x HDMI, 2x DVI.

Right now I have it connected to 1x Mini-Display port, 1x HDMI, 2x DVI. My question is If I move one of the monitors from DVI to mini-display port, would it be able to display all 4 monitors?

Solution
The issue is how you have the screens connected. Of the 3 Hdmi and DVI ports you can only use 2 of them at a time. In order to use 4 screens, 2 of them MUST be display ports. If your monitors dont have displayports then you'll need an actve adapter for each. As far EyeFinity, this is only during gaming when you are a combining the screens.

Maybe the claimed "6 display support" includes splitters on each output. So essentially 3 displays, but each one is duplicated on a 2nd display.

It's good reasoning, but the manufacturer page says it supports 7680x3200 resolutions, which implies 4 monitors of 1920 width in combination.

The resolutions are:
-30": 2560x1600
-27": 1920x1080
-20": 1600x1200 (x2)

Since there are two mini-DP ports I'm going to try to connect one monitor each into there. If that doesn't work, then I'm try using splitters. If I get a Display Port splitters does that duplicate the display, or it can it be used to extend?

The 30" monitor has a display port adapter, and I used a DP -> mini-DP cable and that is working so far. Would a DVI -> mini-DP cable do the trick for my other monitor (none of the other monitors have a DP)?

I think your issue may be the adapters. Your GPU specifications list the following:

Dual-link DVI with HDCP
Max resolution: 2560x1600

DisplayPort 1.2
Max resolution: 4096x2160 per display

3GHz HDMI 1.4a with Stereoscopic 3D Frame Packing Format, Deep Color, xvYCC wide gamut support, and high bit-rate audio
Max resolution: 4096x3112

I believe the problem is the display port adapter / cable. I don't think it supports the 30" monitor's resolution. Since I don't know the exact I/O of your monitors, I can't suggest which to plug in to which socket, but basically you need to make sure they are all within the specification of the outputs. That means you need to eliminate adapters that don't support the correct resolutions. Make sure your DVI cables are dual-link and the DP adapters actually support 1.2.

Also, using a splitter will result in a duplicated display, not an extended one.

Yes this seems to be in line with what I was reading in other threads. I ordered this cable off Amazon to use for one of my monitors http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DJCB83O/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
but I guess it won't work? So it needs to be an active adapter, something like this? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812200944

You'll most likely have problems with that cable. AMD cards have been known to be picky about which adapters they work with. After going thru several adapters between my 5850 and 7950 I finally upgraded to monitors with displayport. The startech adapter you linked to seems to be hit or miss, I've seen it work for some people, where as others have had no luck with it. I would recommend one of the adapters from a company that sells amd cards like HIS or visinotek that lists the adapter as "EyeFinity" compatible

I ended up getting both the cable off Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DJCB83O/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (was unable to cancel the order) and the active adapter http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812200944.

As it turns out an active adapter actually wasn't necessary. The cable off Amazon is a DVI -> Mini-DP and I'm pretty sure it's a passive adapter. FWIW I also tried out the Startech active adapter and that worked as well. So now I'm able to run all 4 monitors, thank you all.
