I had recently re-installed windows 7 on my HP ProBook 4535 and it will play music and audio from whatever I'm watching, but I can't input audio at all. Not through the front jack or via a usb sound card.....

Solution
In your audio manager, mixer tab, under record section click on the icon that looks like a wrench, make sure stereo mix is checked and unmute. Also try with the check and also with the check, allow applications to take exclusive control of this device in the microphone properties. The only other thing I can suggest is to uninstall the audio driver, restart and let windows automatically install it.

Thank you for your reply, and that is definitely a driver that I had not found up to now, however, id did not seem to resolve my problem, but thank you anyway...

If I try via the mic jack, I only will get the right channel with heavy distortion.
When I plug in the usb input, the computer recognizes it, and shows it to be working properly and will let me adjust it's input levels, however there is absolutely no sound coming in. I even tried recording to see if it just wouldn't play while recording, but nothing is coming in...

Try this setting: In control panel, under hardware and sound, click on microphone, then properties go to the advanced tab, select 2 channel 16 bit 44100hz. Then check the box under exclusive mode. "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device"

It says, "Format not supported by the device"
the only setting it will take is 2 channel, 24 bit, 192000 hz
And that's where I get the distorted right channel.
