Asus z87-pro - Problems during POST and boot

I'm having problems with a new build that I've put together, spec as follows;

Motherboard- Asus Z87-Pro
CPU- Intel i5-4670k @3.4GHz
RAM- 8Gb Crucial Ballistix Tactical DDR3 1600Mhz (2x4GB)
GPU- MSI Geforce GTX 660 gaming edition
SSD- Sandisk 128GB
O.S.- Windows 8.1

It POSTed fine to begin with outside the case and I installed windows, but after finishing the build it would not POST at all within the case, it would power up, begin to turn the fans, die, and then try again a few seconds later.

I've stripped it back out of the case and set it up on an antistatic mat, with just a single stick of RAM (in the preferred slot from the manual), the stock cooler, the VGA card and the SSD. I've also flashed the latest BIOS and reset the cmos, and everything is set to default in the BIOS.

At this point, one of two things happens when I try to power up the system;

1) The most common thing is that the system will hang during POST. It's given quite a few different Q-codes at this point, but the most common by far are 15 and 79.
I've been told that 15 is RAM related and 79 could be CPU, so I've tried 4 different sticks in both banks, and when I was refitting the stock cooler (the RAM is inaccessible under the heatsink I originally had attached) I checked out the cpu pins, there doesn't seem to be any problem there as far as I can see.

2) The system will otherwise boot into Windows, maybe once in every 5-10 attempts, but on all bar 3 occasions now, as soon as the system POSTs/ exits the BIOS, power to all of the USB ports seems to stop. There is full use of both when I'm using the BIOS, and there's never been any problem with either device on another machine. I've tried all of the slots on the board, plus tried connecting the 2.0 ports from the case to each of the boards connectors with the same problem each time.

One thing I have noticed is that if it boots into windows with "no power", if I un- and re-plug the mouse, the laser powers on, but in an "on for ~1sec, flickering for 1sec" sort of cycle, while doing the same with the keyboard gives a single flash from the NumLock LED. Neither device allows any input however.

This has got me completely stumped, and any help or suggestions anyone could give would be great.

Hi Cerian,

A few things:

1) Update to the latest UEFI version if you haven't already done so. You can use USB BIOS flashback to do so (check the manual for instructions on renaming the file). You will need a FAT32 formatted USB flash drive plugged into the correct port.

2) If the memory has XMP, load the profile. Use on module only for now.

If that helps we can move on to the USB issues.

Hi Raja, Thanks for your reply. BIOS has already been flashed to 1707, and currently there is 1 4gb stick in slot a2 as per the manual, with the xmp profile loaded. Problem is still occurring.

Difficult to say where the issue lies without you having a spare set of parts. If you dont have access to other parts to debug your only option is to RMA them. DO you know anyone nearby that can test the board with another set of DRAM or CPU?

Not the CPU, but I can probably find a few sticks of RAM tonight after work and try those. Thanks for your help so far, I'll post the results here tomorrow.

Keyboard is a Polaroid HK2026, that's the only device I have connected when trying to boot.

Changing the RAM to a few sticks borrowed from a friend's PC made no difference, still mostly hangs at 15 or 79, or boots with no USB.

...careful: I'm afraid the BIOS 1802 is buggy!!
I'm having exactly the same problem (BIOS doesn't reach POST), staying in an infinite loop of restarts (powerOFF a few seconds, then powerON for a few seconds, and then loop). No overclocking on my system.

I've done any possible troubleshooting tentative (stripoff etc...), including checking that no thermal compound exited the CPU shorting the MoBo somewhere... nothing.
The only change that seemed to bring the system back to normal booting has been downgrading the BIOS from 1802 to 1707.

Just as additional info here are the systems specs:

  • Mobo: Asus Z87 Pro
    CPU: Intel i7-4770K + CoolerMaster V8 cooler
RAM: 32 GB (4x8GB) Kingston HyperX Genesis (KHX16C9K2/16)
GPU: Asus GTX 770 DirectCU2 / GeForge GTX 465 (was not playing any role changing the GPU)
    HD1: Samsung SSD 840 Pro 256
    HD2: Western Digital WD20WEARX
    HD3: Samsung HD502JJ
    Case: Fractal Design R4 (white ;) )
I've been wasting so much time by troubleshooting, that now I'm so happy that I can work again :)

All, just finished this new build and the problem was not visible till I installed the Microsoft updates to Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. Re-booted multiple times installing drivers for the motherboard and other add in cards with no problems then started updating windows when the problem occurred (on reboot system hangs at code 15)... Hoping that a Microsoft fix will come out soon.
