"You need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it" Error

I have a Western Digital external hard drive that will connect, but then give me this error message:

"You need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it" with the option to "Format" or "Cancel".

A few seconds after the error message pops up, the external hard drive then disconnects and the cycle repeats. No matter if I press "Format" or "Cancel" or press neither, the cycle will continue.

How do I get it so that the external hard drive will stay connected to my computer?

64-Bit Windows 7
Western Digital WD5000H1U-00

Thank you

  1. Try a different port and a different USB cable. You may need to get a new enclosure for the hard drive.
