Hello all,

I have a USB flash drive that is not recognized. When I plug it in, windows says it has malfunctioned.

I've looked in device manger for the device and instead of showing up in "Disk Drives" the drive shows up at the bottom in "USB Controllers". The device is listed as "Unknown Device". The drive doesn't even show up in computer management> disk management.

I've tried the following.

Update drivers (using windows)
Shutdown my computer (and unplugged it)
Uninstalled the device
Run a device identifier

I have tired the drive in multiple computers on different operating systems (windows, OSX).

I don't know what else to do.

Would connecting it to a RasPi help. Dose Linux help with this stuff.

Thanks for the help.

p.s. This is a friends device who is not computer savvy, although I'm starting to doubt I'm that savvy. They need the files for finals and they have absolutely no other copies.

It sounds like you may have Malware or a Virus running on the drive, are you able to view the contents of the USB?.. i.e does the drive show up in "My Computer"?

Sometimes a Malware program can "hide" all of the contents on your usb drive, so you could try the following to try and make the files visible again:

1. Goto control panel
2. Appearance & Personalisation
3. Folder options - View Tab
4. Scroll down to "Hidden Files & Folders"
5. Make sure the box "show hidden files and Folders is ticked"

Now plug your usb drive back in and see if you can view any of the folders on the drive

Thanks for the response. I figured out that the drive is dead. Both Windows and OSX don't recognize it's very existence. That is to say that when plugged in the drive never syncs and the OS(s) only index it as a " USB composite device" and refuse to recognize it as a drive.

Thanks again for you help.
