I am interested in building a PC, but I cannot decide whether or not to build a desktop or a LAN rig. What are some advantages and disadvantages?

Oh you mean LAN Party (portable) Desktop... lol. Looked at that and was confused as a LAN is a Local Area Network (the network of connected devices) and thought uhmmm isn't the desktop somehow going to be on that LOL.

Major difference is that for LAN Parties do you want to haul around 20Lbs or more of equipment? That basis is the point for a LAN Party RIG as compared to a desktop RIG. A desktop RIG can be any size, dimensions, and whatever you want inside it (say 6 drives for example) but for LAN Parties this is risky as the equipment is heavy, travels (moving around, getting bumped) and is four times or more likely to be dis/reconnected the cabling which most PCs aren't made to do (infact frowned upon as the more times you...

If your not going to be taking your desktop with you to gaming events, friends houses, etc. just get a normal desktop. Main advantage for lan is portability. With a desktop you could get better temps and have more room for expansion.

Also, some mid-tower cases such as the Corsair Vengeance C70 comes with built-in handles. It's not a big deal to carry a desktop around.

+1 desktop

A desktop RIG can be any size, dimensions, and whatever you want inside it (say 6 drives for example) but for LAN Parties this is risky as the equipment is heavy, travels (moving around, getting bumped) and is four times or more likely to be dis/reconnected the cabling which most PCs aren't made to do (infact frowned upon as the more times you 'reconnect' things the more likelihood you will break it).

So a LAN Party RIG is usually built on smaller mobo designs, much smaller cases (think toaster size) with specialized designed equipment (HDDs that auto 'lock' the drive head to avoid it SMASHING the plates the data is residing on and so on). Also that means your 'locked' into specific hardware, for example if you get some cases and mobo that are lightwieght, you may be restricted from size from ever getting a R9 or Titan GPUs because they simply can't fit. Further the same HEAT issues as laptops is a definitive planning issue, you need to take into account quite alot more on how to cool it all, if you go Liquid, what happens when you travel and say your backpack smacks the case.. OOPPS all that liquid just poured over the $2000 PC and now.... your DOA.

So there is alot to consider, which is why alot (3 to 1 in sales) people have gone laptop simply for the convenience and security that the entire setup is under warranty and garunteed in case anything does go wrong, and it is already set to meet the requirements (portable, can be connected to external monitor/ keyboard / mouse if you want, heat dissapation, already included gamers compoinents, etc.) only problem is they tend to rise up quickly in price as compared to desktops.
