Hey there,

the last few days I've been getting static shocks all over my house. it's happened on my couch, my dog, the light switch in my bedroom, my girlfriends cell phone, and multiple times, my computer keyboard. when it happens with the computer keyboard, the keyboard becomes dead.

it's a logitech light up keyboard, and the lights stay on, just no keypresses work. all i have to do is unplug/replug the usb cable and it works again. i'm worried about possible permanent damage though. any idea what could be going on here and what I can do to help it.

ALSO, this past weekend I installed a SSD drive. everything with the computer seems to be working great though so i don't see why that would cause all this static electricity.

Your couch generates static electricity and so might be the floor of your house. Wear some slippers indoors and make sure to discharge possible static in your body by touching a powered-off power supply plugged into a socket.

The damage that can be dealt into your keyboard is toasting its controller with static discharge. Good thing is that's not an expensive mechanical keyboard.

Static discharges are deadly to your computer components so be careful when handling parts.

Thanks for the response but this just started the last few days... I've been in this house almost 2 years and never had this problem. There's gotta be a specific problem, not just walking without slippers or touching the couch. I don't wear/like slippers so I can't see that being a solution (I'm either barefoot, in socks, or in shoes at all times), and again, as of Saturday I never had to wear them so I don't see why I'd have to start... As for touching a power supply plugged into a socket... would a cell phone charger count? Otherwise it's going to be extremely hard to do that... All of my outlets with things in them are behind desks and whatnot.

I always am sure to discharge myself before touching the inside of my computer, but that's 2 or 3 times a year... I touch my keyboard 100 times a day... I can't exactly stop and discharge myself on something every time... There's gotta be an underlying problem. And it's got to have just started in the last 3 days... Any further ideas?

I was thinking possibly it had something to do with installing the SSD... but then I was thinking if something was wrong with my install, either the computer wouldn't work, wouldn't boot, the drive would get fried... something wrong with the actual computer... so i don't think so, but is it possible something inside it could have gotten messed up in the process that would start this kind of behavior?
