hello,

I would change my gpu, i currently have a gtx560ti.
It is to play at 1920x1080 ultra recent games and come.(skyrim,bf4,assassin's creed black flag, watch dog, bioshock infinite...)

I hesitate between gtx770, r9 280x and r9 290 custom.

Which would be best suited to play the ultra next 2 years?
And what manufacturer?

config
i5 2500
GTX 560TI
8go crucial ballistix
SSD sandisk ultra plus 256go
WD black caviar 1go

Thank you in advance, good day.

It's good you are in Europe where price is relatively unaffected by the LiteCoin mining craze. It's caused R9 280X, 290 and 290X prices to skyrocket in the US.

Anyway if you want to 'futureproof' get the R9 290.

The only 290 I'm going to recommend is the Sapphire Tri-X because the cooler has been proven to tame the stupid hot GPU.

If you pick the 280X all brands should be fine other than Gigabyte and XFX. Their quality just don't cut it for me.
Running ultra in the two next years is a little optimistic, however the fastest of these GPUs are without a doubt the R9 290 custom. It's on performance level with a GTX 780. You could even upgrade your resolution if you got it. The 4 GB of VRAM will be suitable for higher resolutions than 1920x1080. However don't expect to run ultra at much higher resolutions.

So that pretty much cuts the GTX 770 and R9 280X out of the picture. These two GPUs are almost equal in performance.

Summary: The R9 290 is faster than the other GPUs, it is the best choice of the 3 you've listed if you want to keep high settings in the next few years. MIND that it is unsure wether you will be able to run every game at ultra settings, as technology develops and demands increase.

Keep in mind that R2** is overpriced at the moment.

You would run constant 60+ FPS BF4 (or anything on the market today) on GTX770 (that what i would by at the moment) but no one knows what games will be launched in 1 year.. I would not go to high end like GTX780 or R290.. 760 or 770 is more than enough for two years to play at 1080p, that what i believe, not to throw money away...

To be honest GTX780>R9 290 in pure performance (or very near to it, but R9 i much less power efficient) and 770>280X same with power here. If we are not keeping mantle or true audio in mind.

Of course if budget is not a problem choose R290/GTX780

Then get the Asus line of cards which are a bit shorter but still very powerful (and popular)

R9 290 OC

R9 280X Matrix Platinum (sorry the Asus page was not working)

R9 280X OC

Both of those cards are about the same length because they use the same cooler and you said its too long for your PC? Unless you mean to get a new bigger case which is not surprising given how much you are willing to spend.
