I recently have a 9800gt graphics card with no label of its manufacturer on it except for the label
with the text "Nvidia".When I asked from the shop owner whom I bought it from he said that its a Nvidia reference card .So What are they in simple terms?. is there any performance difference between reference cards and cards having board manufacturers ?Are reference cards more durable than usual cards ?.

Solution
They're not "cheap" cheapest.
Not like a reference card is 50$ and aftermarket(proper) card is 250$.
The fact that you have a 9800 GT means that you must have a 6 year old system from 2008.
The CPU, memory, or graphics cards may be the bottleneck, but the chances are low that the 9800 GT is the main cause of the bottleneck. It looks to still be a not that bad card.
It's just a card that is supplied by NVIDIA as is.
If you go to the website, the images you see are of the reference card.
Manufacturers often add more features.
However the reference cards work, and generally are cheapest.

UPDATE: Manufacturers also often reduce features to cut prices.
This card, for example, is an underclocked variation of the 1GB AMD 7750. It also has the older DDR3 standard of memory.
This card is aimed at the low budget consumers who don't know too much about cards and buy looking at 2 GB memory(which is unnecessary, as the card is too weak to use all of it).

My 9800gt is a reference card which performs poorly when it comes to playing newer games like nfs most wanted(2012),
Saints row 3.Does the fact that reference cards are the cheapest vitness to this nasty gaming lags ?.Since I have another chance to exchange my card with another card I am so concerned with this .There were non reference 9800gt cards I could
buy with the same price all in used condition Showcased .And I could have also buy radeon hd3870 or 9600gt.I Want to know which one you recommend too.
