When I boot up Windows 7 I can do stuff for about 10 minutes but then things start not responding. Then when I try to ctrl-alt-del it says operating system not responding press esc to turn off or use power switch. I checked windows update but nothing :( Any ideas?

Can be any number of things, from your computer is all filled with Dust bunnies and your choking it to death, to overheating to a virus to anything else and then more.

Start with the basics:

1) Open your computer and blow out any dust bunnies, use a paint brush and clear off all fans on the CPU / GPU/ PSU and the grills all over the computer.
2) Most / All software up to date can be found at www.filehippo.com
A) Download and run SPECCY, provide us your first tab, this will show us your temps on IDLE. Then install MSI Afterburner and write down during these 'performance issues' what the temps are displayed.
B) You can verify your drivers also using SLIMDRIVERS. It is free and can scan and tell you all the latest updates to all your drivers you need, just dont' 'reboot' under each just wait till the last one is installed.
C) Download Malwarebytes, and run a FULL SCAN. Malware is DIFFERENT then Viruses and many virus scans don't pick these up.
D) If your using Microsoft Security Essentials as you AV REMOVE IT. The software doesn't perform good enough and instead install AVG or AVAST! and runa FULL SCAN (already answered a post like yours and this was thier solution they responded back finding a bunch of crap that MSE didnt' "see").
