I know radeon butchers nvidia when it comes to the little cards but what about high end cards? I believe it is nvidia that takes the civil muffin on this one no?
For gaming, yes. The r9 270(x)+ cards vs equivalent nvidia cards are mining beasts right now. If you feel like you might move in to that direction later on, I'd go with a radeon. But nothing from the r9 line with a stock cooler.
It depends on the price point. AMD was pretty much the undisputed king until high demand appartently from Bitcoin mining drove up the prices of the R9 series. In the $350 area, the R9-280x and the GTX 770 are pretty even and both capable cards. Anything more than those aren't worth the money for 1080P gaming since both can hold 60 fps in high setting in any game.

For bitcoin mining radeon destroys nvidia, but what about gaming? Nvidia takes that one right?
