What is RAM for and what does it do and is it for saving files on because it is compared in memory/ gigabyte e.g. 4 GB RAM 8 GB RAM 16 GB RAM. Also would I be able to buy some 1333 mhz ram to start of a gaming PC with and then upgrade to 1600 mhz 8gb but use both at the same time? My motherboard can handle it I was just wondering whether they would configure and not crash.
Thanks in advance.

Solution
Random access memory
Basically, to hold instructions and data moving between the CPU, motherboard, and drives.

You don't 'store' anything on it.
And as far as 1333 -> 1600. Don't. The 1600 will just clock down to 1333. And with multiple sticks, it is very preferable to have the same size, speed, and brand.

RAM is random access memory, yes it is basically for storing cache etc for games and applications. It has the second fastest memory compared to CPUs. 1333mhz is ok for a pc but everyone these days will tell you to get atleast 1600mhz RAM for a Gaming PC. For gaming you only need 8gb of RAM anymore than that will just be wasted
