I have a relatively older system with pci express 1.0 x16

Based on the questions and answers, I was led to think that a 2.1 card that had a great deal after rebate would work as they are backwards compatible.

It didn't. It shut down the computer and wouldn't start until I removed the card.

Before, I make the mistake again, can I get a definitive answer if a 2.0 will work in my computer as 1.0 cards are pretty few to find. Or do I have to go with 1.0?

It is a lenevo 7373, 8gb memory, 650 watt power.

Thanks

Check your system motherboard to see if there is a BIOS update which resolves the 2.1 card/1.0 motherboard issue. If so, that BIOS update should resolve the shutdown issue. Otherwise, all 2.0 graphic cards are fully backwards compatible with PCI-E 1.0 slots. (it was only the ver 2.1 graphic cards that had compatibility issues).

Yes, a 2.0 card "should" work. 2.0 is spec'd for backwards compatibility with 1.0...BUT, that doesn't mean the motherboard will support it. I have had many issues trying to get cards working on older pcie slots in brand name machines (ie dell, lenovo, hp)...as wolfshadw said, there are usually bios updates that fix this...but sometimes there arent, in which case there may be nothing you can do. Sorry, you likely wont be getting a definitive answer to this particular question here. Lenovo may be able to help, but it sounds like your machine is a bit older...so they may not have the answers you are looking for.

EDIT: trial and error may be your quickest path to answers.

Thanks for trying to help Wolf and Senkasaw. I found a 2.0 one, called PNY and they absolutely assured me it will work. I hope it does.

You are right about it being older, the date stamp has 2007. Probably obsolete by 2008!
