I'm just looking for feedback on what everyone thinks of this build:

http://pcpartpicker.com/user/ahobbitstail/saved/3w6V

CPU Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core $229.97
CPU Cooler Cooler Master Seidon 240M 86.2 CFM Liquid $94.99
Motherboard Asus Z87-PRO ATX LGA1150 $172.99
Memory G.Skill Trident X 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 $169.99
Storage Samsung 840 Pro Series 256GB 2.5" SSD $199.99
Seagate Barracuda 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM Combo or $114.99
Video Card Gigabyte Radeon R9 270 2GB $179.99
Case Corsair 500R White ATX Mid Tower Combo or $89.99
Power Supply Rosewill 450W ATX12V / EPS12V $102.98
Operating System Microsoft Windows 8.1 - 64-bit - OEM (64-bit) $97.27

It's my first time attempting anything like this, and I just want to be sure I'm not wasting my money.

I don't think I need an i7 CPU, because this is a gaming build and it should be wonderful without it. I'm going with the cheaper video card, because on one monitor with the Trident X, I don't think I need more then 2GB memory, right?

Any feedback would be appreciated!

Hi, I definitely recommend you get 8GB of ram rather than 16GB because for a gaming PC any more than 8GB will be wasted and I suggest you get a better video card with the money saved (R9 280x or 770). That rosewill power supply will not cut it, I recommend picking up a Corsair CX500 or any 500 watt power supply from Corsair,Antec,Seasonic,XFX or Enermax

feel free to stick with a 250+GB SSD if you want. or spend more on a 770.

Solution
CUT BACK THE MOTHERBOARD AND GET A BETTER GPU, this is SO SO core for gaming, that GPU is kinda weak compared to what you could budget.. spend 120 max on the MOBO, cut down to 2 x 4GB on the RAM and pour your savings right back into that GPU. That's a very expensive power supply for the low wattage too, maybe its fully modular idk, but you will be better off with a brand like Corsair, Seasonic, XFX, Super Flower, CiT, or Antec...id say 500-600W non modular if you have to will put you in a much more combfy spot.

Oh wow, that saved me a chunk. Thanks for the recommendations guys!
Now because I'm brand new to this I have some follow up questions: Insofar as the power supply goes, do I not want something with a higher efficiency rating? And why do I only need 8 gigs of RAM? I regularly see builds with twice to four times as much - Is it really so overkill? Not that I'm complaining! Cheaper is awesome.

for gaming 8GB is pleny, no game or if any very very few game can even utilize 16GB or more. When you see a build that has 16GB or 32GB that person probably games AND does some industry type work like HD photo and video editing, or 3D modeling and rendering big images( this is where the RAM is really needed, to load and work with HUGE files).

What kind of specs should I be looking for in a GPU?

That makes sense. Well I'm happy to save the money on it. Thanks for the information!

the GPU is an important decision that will depend mostly on: the resolution and how many monitors you game on. what games you will be playing, and how many frames per second is *enough* for you. Most people are happy at 45 frames or higher, 60 is ideal and anything more cant be seen by the human eye. So if you tell us what you want out if it, and how much you can spend on the GPU alone, this will help us out. Generally though you want Gddr5 memory. not Gddr3. older cards will have say 1GB of Gddr3 ram, this sucks. Gddr5 is twice as fast as Gddr3 memory, pin for pin. So 1GB GDDR5 RAM = 2GB GDDR3 RAM. You want 2GB Gddr5 minimum now, some people are thinking they need 4GB gdd5 for "future proofing" but I would say 2-3 GB Gddr5 is great. to make having an i5 even worth it I would say you need at least a GTX 660ti (NVidia end) or better. On the ATI AMD side I would say HD 7870/ r9 270x or higher. both are around the 200$ price point for GPU's.

I'd be willing to spend a few hundred on it if it were to give me not-too-terrible returns. "Future proofing" sounds like something I'd definitely do, if I could afford it. Sapphire 11217-04-20G with 4GB and a R9 270X chipset runs under $300. That's something I could do. Does brand really have much to do with the product being sold, or is it mostly in the integrated technology?

Brand speaks to the quality of parts being used, tech support, cooling options. Really they are all the same chip if you are comparing the EVGA, Sapphire, ASUS, and MSI versions of say an r9 270x. i have never tried powercoler and diamond brands and other brands ive seen but never really heard much of...so i cant speak much. for around the cost of that r9 270x u mentioned i think this is better
