Hi,

I recently purchased a Seasonic Eco Series 400W (SS-400BT) PSU. I want to know what kind of bearing is used in the PSU fan. There is no label on the fan.

I googled for this info but could not find any specification on the fan bearing type for SS-400BT. The specs for Seasonic S12II 430W/520W PSU explicitly mention "120 mm Ball Bearing, Smart and Silent Fan Control".

I placed the PSU horizontally (fan facing upwards and blowing air down) and tried to listen to the sound. I couldn't hear any. Since ball-bearing fans make more (at least some) noise than sleeve-bearing fans, I assume that it is a sleeve-bearing fan. Also, the SS-400BT is an economy (low-cost) PSU. It is priced at around INR 2600 whereas the S12II 430W is priced at around INR 4100. So, it would make sense for the SS-400BT to have a sleeve-bearing fan.

Can anybody tell me (for sure) what kind of bearing is used in SS-400BT PSU fan?

I need to know this as I have to decide how to place the PSU (i.e. horizontally or vertically). The PSU is going inside a modded case. If the fan has a sleeve-bearing, it would be better to place it vertically.

Thank you.

Solution
I've seen a tear-down of an ECO-400 SS-400BT that shows that an ADDA AD1212MS-A71GL sleeve bearing fan was used.

Hi ko888,

Thank you for responding. The URL and the ADDA fan model number provided by you confirms that it is a sleeve-bearing fan.

In my first post, I mentioned that this PSU will be placed in a modded case. Since it has a sleeve-bearing fan, I plan to mount the PSU vertically. What is your opinion regarding this? Is vertical mounting the best way to go about it? Or, it won't make any difference if I place the PSU horizontally?

Thank you once again.

The PSU's fan should be positioned vertically for maximum sleeve bearing longevity.
