Hey everyone,

I recently made some upgrades to my computer. I moved the components into a cooler master trooper case and installed an Msi gtx760 graphics card.

Since these changes the computer shuts down at random times. It suddenly switches off and then immediately boots back up again. Other things like the screen turn off as well.

PSU: 500W Enermax Tomahawk EKT500AWT

Above is my power supply which supposedly can handle it.

If it isn't the power supply I feel it may be the way I attached the power cables. The card only has one 8pin socket on it. Which confuses me since it apparently needs more than this. I have attached one 6pin and one 2pin into these slots.

I have a 6pin to 8pin converter that came with the card would that be a better configuration.

Thanks for your time.

Solution

Hi again - Yes, the MSI gtx760 ITX has one 8pin port. The Tomahawk 500 has a 6pin pcie, so yes if you have a 6pin to 8pin converter use it. That should solve your issue.

A system with a gtx760 requires at least 30 +12v amps, the Tomahawk 500 has 36 +12v amps, more than enough for your system. The CPU, GPU, HDD, etc draw their current from the +12v rail(s). So, it is a much more relevant spec than total watts. Unless the PSU is failing, it has enough...

Hi - Most gtx 760's require 2 - 6pin pcie connectors, some may require a 6pin and an 8pin, etc. Your PSU has only 1 pcie connector. I suspect that is the root
of your problem.

Pls post the brand/model of the gtx760 you have, (MSI has several 760's) so I can dbl check the connectors required.

I believe the brand is msi gtx760 mini itx.

It won't let me upload a photo but the actual card only has one 8pin slot. It doesn't have an 8pin plus 6pin slot like the others.

I believe it's because my power supply may have waned and only just met the requirements to begin with.

Thank you for the feedback. I have 6 to 8pin converter I could try since the 6 + 2 pin didn't work.

However I suspect there is an issue with the power supply for other reasons. I picked up a gxii cooler master 650 watt to put in for the mean time. Its not a great psu but should do the job until I pick up a better one during my next upgrade.
